A Brief History of Hair Colouring

The practice of hair dyeing is not a recent trend; throughout history, people have been altering their natural hair color to align with contemporary fashion. While the options were more limited in ancient times , individuals still embraced the concept, applying natural  dyes to their scalps. Thus, the tradition of hair coloring has deep roots in the past.

Ancient Hair Dyeing-Coloring Techniques

In ancient times, Egyptians concealed gray hair with henna, while Greeks and Romans opted for plant extracts to color their locks. The Greeks, inspired by golden-haired idols like Aphrodite, even developed potent, bleach-like soaps to lighten their hair. Romans, pioneers in hair dyeing, initially created a toxic permanent black dye but eventually shifted to a formulation involving fermented leeches for a safer alternative – quite an intriguing historical haircare journey.

In fact, the development of chemical dye didn’t happen until much later. It can be traced back to a chance moment in the late 1800s, when English chemist William Henry Perkin created the first synthesised dye whilst trying to find a cure for malaria . The colour it created was a purplish mauve, so Perkins called it mauveine. His chemistry professor August Hoffman then produced a colour-changing molecule from the mauveine called para-phenylenediamine or PPD – a chemical that’s still widely used in the industry today.

The Invention of Synthetic Hair Color Dyes

Having said that, a good few years passed before synthetic hair dyes began to emerge on the market. It wasn’t until 1907, when French chemist (and L’Oréal founder) Eugène Schueller first began producing chemical hair dyes – which he called Auréole – for commercial use. After initially selling his product to Parisian salons, Schueller founded his own company in 1909 and the rest, as they say, is history.Throughout the 1900s, hair colours became more advanced with better staying power; home hair dye kits were developed and sold all over the world. In 1956, Clairol introduced the first one-step colour that lightened hair without bleaching it. And, because it was an at-home hair dye, women could colour their hair more discreetly; Clairol’s product was a huge hit, and it arguably helped to change attitudes towards hair dye too.

The initial stigma surrounding hair coloring, once shrouded in secrecy, began to fade away. At the turn of the century, Victoria Sherrow notes in her book “Encyclopaedia of Hair: A Cultural History” that hair dyeing was considered “immodest, daring, and somewhat ‘low class.'” However, by the 1970s, attitudes towards hair underwent a complete transformation. By the 1980s, even Hollywood A-listers enthusiastically embraced hair color. With widespread celebrity endorsements, extensive advertisements, and a more extensive range of available colors, hair dye evolved into a ubiquitous cosmetic choice for both men and women.

Today, hair colouring products at Anushka Hair Salon in Colombo still make up a huge percentage of the beauty industry’s revenue. As new products and trends continue to develop, there’s even more room for colourists to get creative. Yes, our lasting love affair with hair colour is here to stay!

What to Know Before Colouring Your Hair

Ever had a hair dyeing disaster? Hey, everyone’s entitled to a few in their lifetime; you just don’t want to hear the words ‘colour correction’ past teenhood! So, before you reach for the nearest bottle of DIY dye, listen up: here are our top tips for colouring hair.

Book a Professional Consultation with a Colourist

While using at-home coloring kits is perfectly fine, there’s increased risk when opting for a DIY approach without professional guidance. If you aim to make a significant color change, it’s advisable to entrust the task to a qualified colorist. During a salon visit, take advantage of the free consultation offered. Establishing clear communication with your colorist is crucial for a successful outcome. Be upfront about your preferences, as achieving certain transformations, like going from brunette to blonde, may require multiple sessions. Engaging in a 15-minute pre-dye consultation allows you and your colorist to align on the desired look, shade, and technique, ensuring you leave the salon with the hair color you envision.

Do Your Color Research

Navigating the world of hair coloring, with shades like ash grey, marshmallow, espresso, and ruby fusion, can be intricate. Color terminology may vary among stylists, so ensure you achieve the desired shade by familiarizing yourself in advance. Seek inspiration online, curate a Pinterest board, or save Instagram snapshots to provide visual references for your colorist. It’s also beneficial to save images of colors you wish to avoid, particularly when undergoing a significant color change without a specific shade in mind.

Apply a Hair Mask the Day Before Coloring your Hair.

To ensure your hair is adequately hydrated and ready for the coloring process, apply a hair mask a day before. Opt for masks and deep conditioning treatments at this stage, as using them immediately afterward may contribute to premature color fading. It’s advisable to refrain from heavy treatments for a couple of weeks post-dyeing to prolong the vibrancy of the color.
